How to capture over the air ota updates on motorola devices

Buying Motorola  devices these days is more like buying a nexus device.Which actually means you will get software updates much quicker or sometimes even faster than nexus devices.Since these device are sold in huge volumes , updates may not reach to all at a time. This sometimes brings frustration in some users who are eagerly waiting to taste new android updates.

Good part of receiving ota updates is that if a device receives it, It can be used on all other devices(of same model number, device number). So if you have received it,you can share it with your fellow friends or on xda so that other can enjoy the stuff at the same time.

What is an ota?

Ota stands for over the air programming which is a process of sending software updates or configuration updates or security updates to devices Even though manufacturer sends the updates to all devices it takes some time for the updates to reach all the devices.

But how to share it or how to capture it?  Though this is an easy process you have to first know what ota stands for and if it safe to capture and share or use captured one.Since it is a hidden file you might require special permissions which can only be possible if you have rooted it.

So,before proceeding further you might have to follow below prerequisites so that you can capture update without any errors or issues.
  • What ever the Motorola device that you have must be rooted before receiving the ota update.
  • Download and install root explorer app from playstore. There are lot of apps which can get the job done.
  • You need to sign up to any cloud service networks,if you want to capture the ota.

How to capture ota updates?

You got the ota update notification and now you want to capture the ota update so that you can help other to update their phone without waiting for the update to arrive on their devices.

  • If you have already received the notification of new update. Then go to settings and then to about device and click on software update.
  • Download the update and once completed don't update your device.Just click on "update later"
  • Open root explorer app which you have already downloaded and grant super user permission when requested.
  • Now Search for a folder called "/cached".This is the location where our device updates resides and area hidden if you don't have a rooted device.
  • You will find a  zip file example:If you capture soak test file this should somewhat looks like this Blur_version_falcon_asia_retail
  • Copy the zip to any other folder and upload it to cloud so that you share it with others.

final words on capturing ota:
By following the above the procedure you will be able to share  ota update with your friends or to a development community so that you can get some stable and  latest roms.If you  have an unlocked bootloader its not advisable to do any ota updates and also if you have a locked bootloader or unrooted device you can go with captured otas. But trying them is quite risky as you need to be on the same software version which it has been captured.Sometimes it might cause bootloops and at this time you have to perform a hard-reset which could erase all the data on your device. So you have to make a backup of allyour personnal information and media of your device before going for third party ota.
